Did Renewables Save FPL?
Feb 8th, 2009 | By derekgordon | Category: What's News
Utility companies such as FPL Group (Florida Power and Light) are finding that wind and solar energy are crucial to their own sustainability. FPL’s ownership of NextEra, the nation’s largest operator of renewable energy farms, helped the company stave off financial disaster in the fourth quarter.
Even though wind energy is often dismissed as not efficient, it has gone from a third of NextEra’s portfolio to 40% and expected to keep climbing. Timing is a key factor as well, being wind blows stronger in the winter, not that you would notice in Florida. Generating wind in Florida is like trying to not hit a senior citizen when throwing a rock…difficult. Appropriately enough the sun is a great source of renewable energy in the “Sunshine State”. This support from wind should help open doors for other renewable resources like geothermal and tidal energy.
